Reading Workshop: Book Club, Author of our Interest.
These are some of my student’s final projects for our Authors Study unit. The students spent six weeks immersing themselves into one author. The groups were given voice and choice, by naming authors they found interesting, and then were allowed to pick any book they wanted to read by that author. The students learned how to have conversations around the books that they were reading. Moreover, students practiced identifying theme and then comparing and contrasting the themes found inside of the books. This unit allowed for students to read as many books as possible, create relationships with their classmates, and critically analyze texts.
During their student led conferences, these posters have been a highlight. Students are telling their parents about how to identify theme, interesting facts about their authors, and showcasing the different books that they got to discuss during this unit. I am gushing with pride because this station was completely self-directed and created by them.
