The Joy of Teaching.
My journey in teaching started when I was 6 years old. Like many other teachers, I would line up my teddy bears and play school. As time went on, I was no longer playing and fully knew that I wanted to be an elementary school teacher. After applying and getting into the UCLA Education program, I began to become the kind of teacher I always wanted to be. Through intensive research and hard work, I have established my own beliefs and expectations as a teacher, which I bring with me to every classroom I teach in.
I believe the best curriculum is one that is designed using goals set by standards, but also is dynamic in the sense that it changes every year for the students that are in the classroom. Students can be advocates for their needs and as teachers, it is our job to help them create that voice. Whether I am using the Workshop model or a district-approved curriculum like Benchmark, I modify and enhance it to meet the needs of every student.
I believe it is my job to facilitate experiences that will deepen their understanding of the world around them. Inquiry and choice methods best aid in the growth and understanding of concepts.
I believe community is a fundamental aspect of a classroom and without a sense of belonging students will not thrive. Therefore, I implement community circle work and consistent conversations so that students feel welcome.
I believe in establishing a growth mindset within my students. Young children should leave my classroom, or tutoring sessions, every day knowing that even if they do not understand something, it is ok; mistakes are important to make in life and "grow our brain."
